Not since the late Great Mutant Skywheel has such a detectably educated assembly of talented musicians provided an entertainment factor commensurate with the impressive pedigree... redolent of Stereolab, Lamb, and Mono, with comparably crisp hi-fi (truthfully, the entire production here is beyond reproach, remarkably by the band itself) ... when the twins switch off the synths and open those violin cases, they may as well conceal tommy guns.

Who needs to obsess over Mary-Kate 'n' Ashley, when Emily and Susan are right here in DC? The Hsu twins (identical) sing in perfect harmonies, coming in and out of focus over powerful guitar, bass and drums -- played by students at my alma mater, no less. Their band Exit Clov rocked the State Theatre Tuesday night. The twins switched off on instruments between songs, swapping guitar, keyboard, violin and percussion -- I could almost hear their parents bellowing, "We spent a fortune on violin lessons for THIS?!" But the music makes it all okay. Dear Boyfriend writes in his blog, "Exit Clov has a distinct sound that is at once interesting, melodic and dark," and I can agree with that. The music combines a beach-music sound with modern pop, ethereal vocals and intelligent ... lyrics.... Here I am, liking my music much more dark and disturbing.
